A quiet library of human wisdom
Wisdom gathers the world’s short wisdom literature — parables, aphorisms, fairy tales and myths — and keeps it free, open and readable in English.
Our mission
Parables, aphorisms, fairy tales and myths are humanity’s shortest teachers. For most of history they traveled by word of mouth; today they are scattered across archives, anthologies and out-of-print collections, and much of the material is difficult to find in English. Wisdom exists to keep this heritage alive — collected in one place, carefully translated, and presented without clutter, so that a five-minute visit can leave you with something worth thinking about.
What you will find
The library is organized into four genres. Parables are short illustrative stories with a moral or spiritual point. Aphorisms are brief, pointed observations about life, grouped by author and theme. Fairy tales are the folk wonder-tales of many nations. Myths and legends carry the older explanatory stories of cultures around the world. Every text is tagged by genre and collection, so you can browse a single tradition or follow a theme across continents.
How the library is made
The texts come from folklore archives, anthologies and literary collections in the public domain. We translate and edit them for modern English readers, add cover artwork created for this site, and organize everything by genre and collection. The library grows continuously. Translations of traditional material aim for clarity and respect for the original; where source versions differ, ours follows the copy we translated.
Who operates Wisdom
Wisdom is owned and operated by Robust Integrity, an independent publisher of reading and reflection sites. Robust Integrity also operates the Do Think Grow family of websites. The site is funded through unobtrusive affiliate commerce (see our Privacy Policy for how that works and how to opt out) — never through selling visitor data.
